A major tragedy was averted in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district after an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered and safely defused at the Umsning market on Saturday evening, police confirmed.
According to Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh, a suspicious abandoned bag was spotted near the Meghalaya Rural Bank in the busy Umsning market area. Upon receiving the alert, a Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and a K-9 unit were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Following a thorough examination, the BDDS confirmed the presence of an IED and successfully neutralised the device, ensuring the safety of the public and nearby establishments.
Preliminary analysis revealed that the device was assembled using 4.7 kilograms of gelatine, 10 detonators, and approximately 50 iron rod fragments, intended to serve as deadly splinters in the event of an explosion.
"The swift and coordinated response of our team ensured that a potentially catastrophic incident was avoided," SP Singh stated, adding that an investigation is currently underway to identify those responsible for planting the explosive.
