PM Modi Launches Rs 42,000 Crore Agricultural Initiatives to Boost Farmers’ Welfare and Pulse Self-Reliance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched two ambitious agricultural schemes — the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses — as part of a series of projects and initiatives worth over Rs 42,000 crore aimed at transforming India’s agricultural landscape.

The announcements were made at a special event held at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple projects across agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing sectors.

The PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, launched with an outlay of Rs 24,000 crore, focuses on enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting crop diversification, encouraging sustainable farming practices, improving irrigation infrastructure, and expanding access to both short- and long-term credit. The scheme will be implemented in 100 selected low-performing agricultural districts, with a goal of transforming them into models of growth and sustainability.

The second major initiative, the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, carries a financial outlay of Rs 11,440 crore. It aims to increase the production and cultivation area of pulses, strengthen the value chain — including procurement, storage, and processing — and reduce post-harvest losses. The mission is seen as a critical step towards achieving self-reliance in pulses and ensuring protein security for the nation.

In addition to the two flagship schemes, the Prime Minister inaugurated and dedicated to the nation various projects worth Rs 5,450 crore across key agricultural and allied sectors. He also laid the foundation stone for further initiatives totaling around Rs 815 crore.

Addressing a large gathering of farmers and stakeholders, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of agricultural reforms for India’s progress in the 21st century. He stated that the two newly launched schemes would transform the fortunes of millions of Indian farmers and strengthen the rural economy.

Highlighting achievements since the NDA government came to power in 2014, Modi noted that: Agricultural exports have nearly doubled in the last 11 years. Food grain production has increased by 90 million metric tonnes. Fruit and vegetable output has risen by 640 lakh metric tonnes. India is now the world’s largest producer of milk and the second-largest producer of fish.

He also mentioned that six new fertilizer plants have been established, and 25 crore soil health cards have been distributed to farmers since 2014.

The Prime Minister urged farmers to move beyond traditional crops like wheat and rice and focus more on pulses and high-value crops, which are essential for improving nutritional security and ensuring sustainable agricultural growth. He stressed that the success of the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana would depend on effective implementation at the local level.

Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also addressed the event, reiterating the government’s commitment to prioritizing farmers’ welfare. He noted that recent GST reductions on agricultural equipment would bring further relief to farmers.

Chouhan shared that under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), over Rs 3.9 lakh crore has been directly transferred into the bank accounts of eligible farmers. Additionally, under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers have received insurance claims worth Rs 1.83 lakh crore through direct benefit transfer.
