Fresh violence erupted along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Thursday, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to another, following a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district.
The incident occurred near Tapat village under the jurisdiction of Hamren police station, where both Assam and Meghalaya residents laid claim to a disputed tract of agricultural land. According to officials, the confrontation escalated when a group from the Meghalaya side reportedly began harvesting paddy on the contested farmland, prompting strong objections from villagers on the Assam side.
The disagreement quickly turned violent, leading to a physical altercation between the two groups. In the ensuing clash, a 48-year-old man from Assam, identified as Oriwell Timung, was killed. Another individual sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
To control the situation and prevent further escalation, police deployed to the area resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Authorities have sent the deceased's body for a post-mortem examination.
Officials confirmed that tension had been simmering in the area for over a week due to ongoing disputes over ownership of the agricultural land.
The Assam-Meghalaya border has long been a flashpoint for conflict, with several areas remaining disputed since Meghalaya was carved out of Assam in 1972. Despite efforts by both state governments to resolve the boundary issues through dialogue, periodic clashes continue to erupt, particularly during the agricultural season when land use becomes contentious.
