External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held talks with Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi, underlining the urgent need for both nations to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
During his opening remarks, Dr. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s longstanding support for Afghanistan’s development, stability, and sovereignty. He emphasised that closer collaboration between the two countries not only contributes to Afghanistan’s national growth but also enhances regional security and resilience.
"India has a deep and abiding interest in Afghanistan’s development and progress. We are fully committed to its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence," Dr. Jaishankar stated. He also announced that India’s Technical Mission in Kabul will be upgraded to the status of the Embassy of India, reflecting a renewed diplomatic commitment.
As part of its ongoing development assistance, India committed to undertaking six new projects in Afghanistan. In a gesture of goodwill, Dr. Jaishankar announced the donation of 20 ambulances, MRI and CT scan machines for Afghan hospitals, and a fresh consignment of vaccines to support immunisation efforts in the country.
On his part, Afghan Foreign Minister Muttaqi assured that Afghanistan would not allow any force to use its territory against other nations. He emphasised that Afghanistan values its relationship with India and seeks to build ties based on mutual respect, trade, and people-to-people connections.
"Afghanistan has never made hostile statements against India. We have always valued our good relations and look forward to strengthening them further," Muttaqi said.
The high-level meeting marks a significant step in re-engaging bilateral ties, especially amid evolving regional dynamics and security concerns.
