Assam DSP Sandipan Garg, Cousin of Late Singer Zubeen Garg, Arrested in Connection with Singer's Death

Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg, a cousin of the late singer Zubeen Garg, has been arrested in connection with the singer’s mysterious death in Singapore last month. The arrest was made by the Assam Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday, making it the fifth in the ongoing high-profile investigation.

CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed the arrest and stated that legal procedures are underway. Sandipan Garg has also been suspended from his duties in the Assam Police pending further investigation.

According to sources in the investigation team revealed that DSP Garg was among those present during the singer’s final hours aboard a private yacht in Singapore. Authorities suspect foul play, with charges including murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence being considered.

Earlier, the CID arrested four others in connection with the case: Shyamkanu Mahanta, chief organiser of the North East India Festival, Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen’s personal manager, Band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta.

All five individuals were reportedly present during the Singapore trip. CID officials allege inconsistencies in their accounts and suspect a coordinated attempt to cover up key details surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death.

Sandipan Garg was produced before a Guwahati court on Wednesday and has been remanded to seven days in police custody. Investigators had sought 14 days for custodial interrogation.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident, assuring the public that the state is committed to ensuring justice in the case. "We are in touch with Singapore authorities, and a chargesheet will be filed within three months," he said.

Zubeen Garg, a beloved singer, composer, and actor from Assam, passed away under unclear circumstances in Singapore in early September 2025, sparking grief across the Northeast and nationwide outrage. His death has since triggered a large-scale investigation involving both Indian and international agencies.
