A day-long workshop on “Benefits from Next-Generation GST” was organized at the Muktadhara Auditorium in Agartala on Wednesday, aiming to create wider awareness about the upcoming reforms under the new GST framework. The event was jointly hosted by the Taxes Organization under the Finance Department, Government of Tripura, as part of a nationwide outreach campaign on GST reforms.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the workshop, which was attended by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Finance Secretary Apurba Roy, senior government officials, tax administrators, business representatives, and other stakeholders.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Saha hailed the Next-Gen GST as a “bold and historic reform”, describing it as a transformative step that would “largely benefit the common people.” He said that the earlier multi-layered GST structure often led to confusion among traders and taxpayers, whereas the new system aims to simplify tax slabs, ensure greater transparency, and reduce the overall tax burden.
“Earlier, people were confused by multiple taxes and complex slabs. The new GST will be easier to understand and comply with. It is a pro-people reform that will directly benefit the poor and middle class,” said Dr. Saha.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the number of GST slabs has been rationalized—reduced from five to two major categories, making compliance simpler for small traders and consumers alike. He also linked the reform to the Centre’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’, stating that Tripura has already prepared a development roadmap aligned with this national goal.
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy in his address said that the workshop would help bridge the information gap between taxpayers and the administration. “Such interactive sessions ensure that both government officials and the business community are on the same page as we move toward a more transparent and efficient tax system,” he noted.
Officials from the Taxes Department presented detailed sessions on Next-Gen GST features, including the simplified return filing process, improved compliance tools, and digital transparency measures. Participants also had the opportunity to raise queries and discuss implementation challenges at the state level.
The event forms part of a broader national initiative following the 56th GST Council meeting, where major decisions on tax rationalization and compliance reforms were finalized. The Government of India has also launched a public outreach campaign titled “GST Bachat Utsav” to promote awareness about the benefits of the restructured tax system.
According to officials, these reforms are expected to enhance ease of doing business, reduce tax evasion, and strengthen revenue collection while maintaining fairness for consumers. For Tripura, where a large number of small businesses operate in the unorganized sector, the simplified system is likely to reduce paperwork and improve compliance rates.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by senior officials from the Finance Department, who expressed confidence that the Next-Gen GST would mark a new era of tax transparency and efficiency in Tripura.
