PIL Filed in Gauhati High Court Seeking Impartial Probe into Zubeen Garg’s Death

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Gauhati High Court demanding an impartial and transparent investigation into the death of Assam’s celebrated singer and cultural icon, Zubeen Garg. The petition raises concerns over alleged irregularities and possible foul play in the circumstances surrounding his death.
The PIL, submitted on Tuesday by social activist Abhijit Sharma and advocate Palash Ranjan Baruah, urges the court to ensure judicial oversight of the investigation. The petitioners have alleged a potential criminal conspiracy and misuse of official authority, claiming that these factors may have influenced the initial course of the inquiry.
A key aspect of the petition focuses on the role of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg, who was reportedly associated with the North East India Festival—an event where Zubeen Garg was scheduled to perform shortly before his death. The petition questions DSP Garg’s involvement and calls for scrutiny of all individuals and authorities linked to the event and its organisation.
Calling for a court-monitored investigation, the PIL argues that only judicial intervention can guarantee a fair, unbiased, and comprehensive probe free from external pressures.
