A tragic incident marred the festive spirit of Lakshmi Puja on Monday, as a 48-year-old daily wage labourer, Subal Das, lost his life after being run over by a train near Sekerkote Railway Station in West Tripura district.
The accident occurred around 10:00 AM when Subal Das, a resident of a nearby locality, was reportedly crossing the railway tracks on his way to work — a routine he followed daily. As he was crossing, a railway engine approaching from the Agartala direction fatally struck him. The impact was so severe that both his legs were severed.
A short while later, his family members discovered his lifeless body lying beside the tracks and broke into heart-wrenching cries, drawing the attention of local residents. Soon after, a DEMU passenger train coming from the Sabroom direction arrived at the scene and was forced to halt for over an hour due to the incident.
Local residents promptly informed Amtali Police Station and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) stationed at Agartala Railway Station. Police and RPF personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
Subal Das lived with his wife and young son in a house adjacent to the railway tracks. The family is reported to be in severe financial distress. In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Subal’s mother had passed away just 25 days earlier — and now, the family is reeling from yet another devastating loss.
