“Mayabini” Walks Into the Wild: Kaziranga Names Elephant Calf in Tribute to Zubeen Garg
Oct 05, 2025
In a poignant blend of wildlife celebration and cultural homage, a newborn elephant calf at Assam’s Kaziranga National Park has been named ‘Mayabini’ — a heartfelt tribute to the late musical legend Zubeen Garg.
The female calf was born to Kuwari, one of the park’s well-known elephants, and the announcement came on World Animal Day, adding special significance to the occasion. Assam’s Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary shared the news on social media on Saturday night, delighting fans of both wildlife and music across the state.
“Heartening news on #WorldAnimalDay — Kuwari, the elephant of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, has given birth to a healthy female calf! With immense affection and public goodwill, we’ve named her ‘Mayabini’ — a symbol of new life, hope, and harmony in the wild,” Patowary wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The name ‘Mayabini’ carries deep emotional resonance for Zubeen Garg’s admirers, as his hauntingly beautiful song “Mayabini Ratir Buku” echoed during his final rites and became an unofficial anthem of farewell among fans.
By naming the calf after the song, Kaziranga not only honors a beloved cultural figure but also underlines the enduring connection between Assam’s natural heritage and its rich musical legacy.
As Mayabini takes her first steps in the lush grasslands of Kaziranga, she carries with her the memory of a voice that once defined a generation — and now lives on in the wild.
