Rajnath Singh Stresses AI, Drone Integration to Bolster Maritime Security

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday called for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), drones, and automated response systems into India's maritime security framework, stressing the need for rapid technological advancement to meet evolving threats.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the 42nd India Coast Guard (ICG) Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi, Singh said the ICG must remain agile and continuously upgrade its training and equipment. He underscored the growing importance of AI-enabled surveillance and automation in reducing response times to mere seconds and enhancing operational readiness.

"With the increasing complexity of maritime threats, especially from cyber and electronic warfare, the adoption of intelligent and automated systems is no longer optional—it is essential," Singh stated.

The Defence Minister also highlighted the impact of regional instability on India's coastal security. Citing frequent developments in neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Nepal, Singh noted that issues like illegal migration, refugee influx, and irregular maritime activities—particularly in the Bay of Bengal—pose significant security challenges.

He urged the Coast Guard to maintain not only robust routine surveillance but also a high level of geopolitical awareness, ensuring swift and informed responses to external developments.

Addressing the evolving role of women in defence, Singh praised the inclusion of women officers in frontline operational roles. "Today, women officers are not just part of the team—they are leading from the front. This reflects our commitment to inclusive participation across all levels of leadership," he said.

Singh also commended the Coast Guard for its crucial role as the first line of response during maritime emergencies and natural disasters. He emphasized that the force continues to be a key pillar in ensuring both internal and external security.
