Assamese Music Icon Zubeen Garg Dies at 52 After Scuba Diving Mishap in Singapore


Celebrated Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has tragically passed away at the age of 52 following a scuba diving accident in Singapore. The singer was in the island nation to participate in the 4th North East India Festival, set to begin today.

According to multiple reports, Garg encountered severe breathing difficulties while scuba diving in the sea near Singapore. Despite being swiftly rescued and taken to a local hospital, efforts to revive him through CPR were unsuccessful. He was admitted to the ICU but was later declared dead by medical staff.

Organisers of the North East Festival confirmed that Garg had arrived in Singapore as an official participant in the cultural event, which aims to promote the diverse heritage of India’s northeastern states. The tragic incident occurred just hours before the opening of the festival.

Zubeen Garg was a household name across Assam and much of Northeast India. With a career spanning over three decades, he was best known nationally for the chart-topping Bollywood song “Ya Ali” from the 2006 film Gangster. He was also a prolific contributor to Assamese cinema and music, known for his versatility as a singer, composer, actor, and filmmaker.

Tributes have poured in from fans, fellow musicians, and political leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with artists like Papon, Shaan, Pritam, Vishal Dadlani, and Armaan Malik, expressed their condolences and remembered Garg’s immense contribution to Indian music and culture.
