Rs 23 Lakh Recovered from Bank Lockers of Arrested ACS Officer Nupur Bora; Total Seizures Cross Rs 3 Crore

The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell on Wednesday intensified its investigation into arrested Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora, recovering Rs 23 lakh in cash from two bank lockers in Assam’s Barpeta district. The latest seizure comes just a day after officials discovered Rs 92.5 lakh in cash and gold and diamond jewellery worth approximately Rs 1.5 crore from Bora’s residences in Guwahati and Barpeta.
With the latest recovery, the total value of assets seized so far exceeds Rs 3 crore, marking what officials describe as the largest-ever cash haul in the history of the vigilance cell.
Bora, who was serving as Circle Officer in Goroimari, Kamrup district at the time of her arrest, is accused of amassing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. She was arrested earlier this week after a six-month-long surveillance operation triggered by an allegedly illegal land transfer she had authorized in Barpeta.
Investigators have also traced three flats in Guwahati linked to Bora, with several additional properties and financial transactions still under scrutiny. Multiple individuals suspected of facilitating or aiding the transactions are currently being questioned.
Speaking on the matter, Senior Superintendent of Police (Vigilance Cell) Rosie Kalita said, “This is the largest seizure we have made to date. The investigation is ongoing, and more assets may come to light.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a strong stance on the case, calling it a grave breach of public trust.
“She had amassed wealth 400 times more than her known income. Mere dismissal is not enough — she must face penal consequences through the legal process,” Sarma said at a public event in Baksa district.
He also urged citizens to remain alert and report any incidents of bribery or corruption, reaffirming his government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Bora’s arrest is part of a broader anti-corruption drive launched by the Assam government to clean up the bureaucracy and restore public confidence in the administrative system.
