Tripura Legislative Assembly's 8th Session: Deputy Speaker to Chair Proceedings; Four Key Bills on Agenda

The Tripura Legislative Assembly has announced a shortened session from September 19 to 23, adjusting its legislative calendar to accommodate the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations and a scheduled visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Due to the Prime Minister's visit on September 22, the Assembly will not convene on that day. Instead, the legislative business planned for that date will be carried forward to September 23, which will now mark the conclusion of the session.

With Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen currently unwell, Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul will preside over the proceedings. The decision was finalized during a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting held earlier this week at the Assembly complex.

Speaking to the media, Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated, “Durga Puja is the heartbeat of Tripura, and we recognize the importance of allowing both legislators and citizens to fully participate in the festivities. At the same time, we are ensuring that governance continues uninterrupted.”

Despite the curtailed duration, the session will carry a robust legislative agenda, with four key bills scheduled for introduction on the opening day: Tripura State Goods and Services Tax Bill, Tripura Janabiswas Amendment Provisions Bill, The Factories (Second Amendment), 2025 Bill, Tripura Shops and Establishment (Seventh Amendment) Bill.

The session will begin and end with Question and Answer rounds, maintaining parliamentary accountability. Additionally, Private Members’ Proposals will be presented by MLA Dipak Majumdar, MLA Rampada Jamatia, and a representative from the CPI-M, ensuring a diversity of viewpoints within the limited schedule.

Representatives from all major political parties, including the Congress and Tipra Motha, attended the BAC meeting. However, Leader of the Opposition Jiten Choudhury was notably absent, with a CPI-M colleague representing him during the discussions.
