Mayor Dipak Majumder inspects Battala Crematorium, Promises Overhaul and Strict Action Against Extortion

Responding to growing public concerns over the condition and functioning of the Battala crematorium, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumdar conducted an inspection of the facility on Thursday. He was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, Chief Executive Officer of Agartala Smart City Ltd. Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, AMC Municipal Commissioner D. K. Chakma, and other senior officials.

The visit followed complaints from grieving families regarding poor maintenance, lack of proper facilities, and alleged unethical practices by some cremation workers.

Speaking to the media during the inspection, Mayor Majumdar acknowledged the issues and assured swift corrective measures. “We are committed to improving the infrastructure and overall environment of the crematorium. If required, we will appoint additional morticians and deploy more safai karmis to maintain cleanliness and ensure dignity for the families performing last rites,” he said.

A major announcement during the visit was the proposed renovation of the nearby Shiv temple, one of the oldest religious landmarks in the locality. “The Chief Minister has also shown interest in the temple’s restoration. We are planning to renovate it and open it to the public soon,” the Mayor added, highlighting the temple’s cultural and spiritual significance.

Addressing a particularly serious concern, Mayor Majumdar condemned the reported instances of extortion by a section of crematorium workers. “We have received complaints that some workers are demanding money from bereaved families. Let me make it absolutely clear—cremation at Battala is completely free of cost. No one is authorized to ask for or accept any payment,” he warned.
