Anutin Charnvirakul Becomes Thailand’s Third Prime Minister in Two Years Amid Political Upheaval
Sep 07, 2025
Anutin Charnvirakul has officially taken office as the new Prime Minister of Thailand, becoming the third person to hold the position in just two years, following a period of intense political turbulence.
Anutin, a seasoned politician and influential business tycoon, was endorsed by the Thai Parliament on September 5, securing 311 votes, well above the 247 required. His appointment was formally ratified by royal endorsement on Sunday, September 7.
He succeeds Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who was dismissed from office by Thailand’s Constitutional Court on August 29 for an ethics violation. The ruling cited an inappropriate phone conversation with Cambodia’s Senate President during a sensitive border dispute — a move that sparked both controversy and calls for transparency.
Anutin previously served as Deputy Prime Minister, Health Minister, and Interior Minister, and is widely known for spearheading the decriminalization of cannabis in Thailand — a landmark move that positioned the country as a trailblazer in Southeast Asia.
“I pledge to lead with integrity and transparency,” Anutin said in his first public address. “Our priority is restoring unity and public confidence. Within four months, we aim to call for a general election to give the people their voice.”
The newly appointed leader has already announced a Cabinet filled with experienced technocrats and political veterans. Notable appointees include Ekniti Nitithanprapas as Finance Minister and Auttapol Rerkpiboon as Energy Minister — signaling a focus on economic stability and energy reform.
