Tripura Aims to Cover 50,000 Households Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme by March 2027

In a decisive push towards renewable energy, Tripura’s Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the state’s ambitious plan to scale up solar power adoption under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aiming to reach 50,000 households by March 2027.

The announcement was made during a mega awareness camp held at Hall No. 2 of Unakoti Kalakshetra in the Unakoti district headquarters subdivision. The event was organized by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and witnessed the presence of several key dignitaries including local MLA Birajit Sinha, Gournagar Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Lakhi Namah, Vice Chairperson Badruzzaman, Municipal Council Chairperson Chapala Debroy, Vice Chairperson Nitish Dey, and TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu.

Minister Nath emphasized that Tripura’s power generation has largely been dependent on natural gas, but dwindling gas supply has prompted the state to seek sustainable alternatives. “The future lies in solar energy. Our goal is to bring this scheme to 50,000 consumers across the state by March 2027,” said the Minister.

Under the central government’s PM Surya Ghar scheme, consumers are eligible for substantial subsidies for installing rooftop solar systems: Rs 33,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 66,000 for a 2 kW system, Rs 85,000 for a 3 kW system.

As of now, 13,536 consumers in Tripura have registered under the scheme, and 266 rooftop solar panels have already been installed.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, with a national target of installing rooftop solar panels on one crore households by 2027. The scheme aims to provide free electricity of up to 300 units per month to beneficiary households.

This strategic shift aligns with Tripura’s broader vision of becoming more energy self-reliant and environmentally sustainable. The state's increasing engagement with solar power is expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower electricity costs for citizens, and contribute to India’s commitment to renewable energy targets.
