PM Modi Holds Bilateral Talks with Singaporean PM Lawrence Wong; Five Key Agreements Signed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging delegation-level talks with his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong in New Delhi on Thursday, reinforcing the strong strategic partnership between India and Singapore. The high-level meeting resulted in the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across critical sectors, including civil aviation, space cooperation, skill development, digital asset innovation, and the creation of a green and digital shipping corridor.

In a joint press statement following the talks, Prime Minister Modi underlined Singapore’s role as India’s largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, describing it as an "important pillar" of India’s Act East Policy. He emphasized that technology and innovation remain key drivers of the bilateral relationship and announced plans to deepen collaboration in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, quantum computing, and digital technologies.

“The sectors like green shipping, skilling, civil nuclear cooperation, and urban water management will become focal points in our partnership,” Modi said. He also announced that both countries have agreed to undertake a time-bound review of the Bilateral Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) as well as the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement, to further enhance trade and investment flows.

Touching upon security issues, Prime Minister Modi noted that India and Singapore share common concerns regarding terrorism and emphasized the need for collective global action. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Wong and the Government of Singapore for their support and solidarity following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, on his first official visit to India as Singapore’s head of government, highlighted the deepening cooperation in space technology, noting that over 20 Singapore-made satellites have been launched by India. He stated that the newly signed MoU on space collaboration would further broaden the scope of this partnership.

“We have also agreed to enhance exchanges between our civil services and to continue expanding cooperation in frontier areas like space,” Wong added.

The visit of Prime Minister Wong coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore and underscores the mutual commitment to strengthening ties in regional and global contexts. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, bilateral relations were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore in September last year.
