Veteran Producer and Cinematographer Prem Sagar Passes Away at 77


Veteran film and television producer Prem Sagar, best known for carrying forward the illustrious legacy of the Sagar family in Indian entertainment, passed away on Sunday morning at 10 AM. He was 77.

An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, from the 1968 batch, Prem Sagar’s formal training laid the groundwork for his successful career as a photographer, cinematographer, and producer. He was the son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, and played a key role in the family’s production banner, Sagar Arts.

Prem Sagar made significant contributions behind the scenes in Indian cinema and television, working on several films as a cinematographer and photographer, and later taking on production responsibilities for major projects. His work was instrumental in shaping the visual identity of Sagar Arts' productions.

Sagar Arts is best remembered for the iconic television series Ramayan, which aired in the late 1980s and became a cultural phenomenon across India. While the show was directed by Ramanand Sagar, Prem Sagar’s creative vision and technical expertise helped define its groundbreaking visual appeal. He was deeply involved in maintaining and evolving the family’s storytelling tradition in the years that followed.

Prem Sagar’s efforts helped ensure that the Sagar family's legacy continued into the modern era of Indian television, adapting to changing audiences while staying true to stories rooted in Indian mythology and culture.

His death marks a significant loss to the Indian film and television fraternity. Colleagues, friends, and fans remember him as a passionate craftsman and a quiet force behind some of the most beloved productions in Indian entertainment history.
