PM Modi, Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba Unveil 10-Year Strategic Roadmap in Tokyo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba held summit-level talks in Tokyo yesterday, resulting in the launch of a comprehensive 10-year roadmap to significantly deepen bilateral cooperation across strategic, economic, and technological sectors.

The talks were part of the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. In a joint press briefing, Prime Minister Modi announced a series of new initiatives aimed at expanding cooperation in investment, innovation, environment, health, mobility, and human resources.

A major highlight of the summit was the announcement of a target to achieve ¥10 trillion (approximately $68 billion) in Japanese investment in India over the next decade. Prime Minister Modi urged Japanese companies to "Make in India, Make for the World," highlighting the opportunities in India's growing industrial and digital sectors.

Both leaders pledged enhanced cooperation between startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from the two countries. Emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, healthcare, and environmental technologies were identified as key areas for collaboration.

A new Action Plan for Human Resource Exchange and Cooperation was launched, with a goal to facilitate the two-way movement of over 500,000 professionals and workers between India and Japan in the next five years. The initiative spans multiple sectors, including technology, healthcare, education, and skilled trades.

Reinforcing their shared vision for a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, India and Japan adopted a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation. Both leaders expressed common concerns over regional security and pledged stronger collaboration in defence manufacturing, maritime security, and technological innovation in the defence sector.

In a major step towards deeper space collaboration, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the agreement between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on the Chandrayaan-5 mission under the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) programme. Modi noted that the partnership has now extended beyond Earth, becoming a symbol of human progress in space exploration.
