Centre approves Rs 3,634 Cr railway line doubling between Furkating and New Tinsukia to boost northeast connectivity

In a major push to infrastructure development in the Northeast, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the doubling of the railway line between Furkating and New Tinsukia in Assam. The project, estimated at Rs 3,634 crore, will be executed by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and spans a total length of 194 kilometres.

This crucial railway corridor connects Upper Assam to the rest of the country and plays a vital role in both passenger and freight transportation. It is currently served by several long-distance and intercity trains, including the Rajdhani Express, and acts as a key route for goods movement in the region.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the project will significantly enhance capacity, speed, and reliability, thereby reducing congestion and enabling more efficient operations. The doubling is expected to accelerate the economic development of the region and contribute to the central government’s larger vision of transforming the Northeast into a logistics and connectivity hub.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the decision, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “Grateful to the Union Cabinet led by Adarniya Shri @narendramodi ji for approving the Furkating–Tinsukia Doubling project at a cost of ₹3,634 crore. This will allow faster movement of passengers and goods and aid in faster development of the region.”

This project is part of a broader package of four major railway initiatives approved by the Cabinet, amounting to a total investment of Rs 12,328 crore. The other approved projects include: New railway lines: Deshalpar–Hajipir–Luna and Vayor–Lakhpat (Gujarat), Third and fourth lines: Secunderabad (Sanathnagar)–Wadi (Telangana and Karnataka) and Third line: Bhagalpur–Jamalpur (Bihar).

Prime Minister Modi noted that the Cabinet’s latest decisions underscore the government’s focus on connectivity and next-generation infrastructure, with a special emphasis on remote and underserved regions such as the Northeast and parts of Gujarat.
