PM Modi to Visit Japan and China for Bilateral Summit and SCO Meeting
Aug 28, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-nation tour this evening, beginning with a visit to Japan to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. The visit marks his eighth trip to Japan and his first bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to review the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan. Discussions are expected to cover a wide range of areas including defence and security cooperation, trade and economic ties, technology and innovation, as well as people-to-people exchanges. The leaders will also deliberate on regional and global developments of mutual interest.
The visit aims to reinforce the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between the two nations, while advancing a shared vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
In the second leg of his tour, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several participating world leaders.
India became a full member of the SCO in 2017 and held the presidency of the Council of Heads of State during 2022–23. The upcoming summit will serve as a platform for India to engage in regional cooperation on issues such as security, connectivity, and economic development.
