Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Wednesday emphasized the need for both healthcare professionals and patients' families to uphold their respective responsibilities to maintain a healthy and efficient healthcare environment in the state. He made these remarks while inaugurating the 20th Foundation Day celebration of Tripura Medical College and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Teaching Hospital.
Addressing a gathering at the college’s Vivekananda Auditorium, Dr. Saha called on doctors to remain committed to their noble profession and deliver patient care with the highest level of accountability. “Only then can we strengthen public trust in the state’s healthcare system,” he stated.
The Chief Minister inaugurated a newly renovated playground and gallery on the college campus. He also laid the foundation stones for a G+4 Trauma Care Centre and a G+13 Residential Building, as part of the ongoing infrastructural development of the medical institution. To mark the occasion, a voluntary blood donation camp was also organized.
Dr. Saha praised the transparent functioning of Tripura Medical College and urged other healthcare institutions in the state to adopt similar standards. “The medical profession is one of the noblest. To maintain the dignity and respect it commands, doctors must treat patients with utmost sincerity and responsibility,” he said.
He also highlighted the transformative role of science and technology in modern healthcare, underlining the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize patient care. “However, it is imperative for doctors to continuously upgrade their skills to utilize such advancements effectively,” he added.
Speaking on medical education in the state, the Chief Minister informed that Tripura currently has 400 MBBS seats, and efforts are being made to increase the intake at Tripura Medical College from 100 to 150 seats.
Dr. Saha encouraged hospital authorities to improve public outreach and visibility regarding their work, asserting that better communication could further enhance public confidence in the healthcare system.
Tripura’s Health Secretary, Kiran Gitte, in his address, noted that the state allocates nearly 3% of its GDP towards healthcare infrastructure — a figure significantly higher than many larger Indian states. He also revealed plans to establish another medical college to improve healthcare access in tribal areas.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Dr. Promathesh Roy, Chairman of the Society for Tripura Medical College, Chief Executive Officer Swapan Saha, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Arindam Dutta, and Foundation Day Celebration Committee Secretary Prof. (Dr.) A.K. Chakma.
As part of the celebration, meritorious students and winners of various sports competitions were felicitated by the Chief Minister and other guests. Former faculty members, alumni, current staff, and students also attended the ceremony, making it a memorable and vibrant occasion.
