Assam Medical College & Hospital named centre of excellence for rare diseases
Aug 27, 2025
In a significant recognition of its medical capabilities, the Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases by the Government of India. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare through an official memorandum issued on August 26.
This prestigious recognition falls under the provisions of the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021, and positions AMCH among a select group of only 15 such centres across the country. The designation enables AMCH to play a key role in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and research of rare diseases — a critical area of healthcare that affects a small percentage of the population but often lacks widespread medical support.
With this development, AMCH becomes the first medical institution in Assam and the entire Northeast region to be recognised as a Centre of Excellence for rare diseases. This is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services for patients in the region suffering from rare and complex conditions.
According to the Ministry’s memorandum, AMCH will function in alignment with the guidelines of the NPRD, 2021, and any directives issued by the Health Ministry from time to time. As a Centre of Excellence, it will also be eligible for government funding, technical support, and capacity building initiatives to strengthen its infrastructure and services for rare disease management.
