In a significant operation, Assam Police on Monday seized 30,420 bottles of codeine phosphate, a banned cough syrup, with an estimated value of Rs 3.4 crore. The drugs were recovered from a vehicle intercepted at the Churaibari check post in Sribhumi district, located along the Assam-Tripura border.
The seizure, which took place during a routine vehicle check, revealed the syrup was concealed inside 390 oil tins. The vehicle was reportedly traveling from West Bengal and was heading towards Agartala in Tripura.
Two individuals, identified as Saminur Islam and Sheikh Alamin, both hailing from Kolkata, were arrested in connection with the illegal drug haul. The police are now interrogating the suspects to unravel the broader smuggling network involved in the operation.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend the police’s successful intervention. He wrote, "Interception at Churaibari check post led to the seizure of 30,420 bottles of Codeine Phosphate worth Rs 3 crore. Two drug peddlers are behind bars. A solid strike against the drug menace."
