Vietnam Braces for Typhoon Kajiki: Nearly 600,000 Evacuated, Airports Shut Down

Vietnam is on high alert as Typhoon Kajiki, the most powerful storm of the year so far, barrels toward the country's central coast. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of nearly 586,000 residents from high-risk areas and implemented widespread emergency measures ahead of the storm’s expected landfall on Monday afternoon.

According to Vietnam’s national weather agency, Typhoon Kajiki is packing sustained wind speeds of up to 166 kilometres per hour, with the potential to bring torrential rains, widespread flooding, and dangerous landslides in mountainous regions.

In preparation, the government has suspended all flights at several major airports, closed schools, and urged businesses in affected areas to remain shut until further notice.

More than 16,500 soldiers and 107,000 paramilitary personnel have been mobilized across the country to assist with evacuation efforts and remain on standby for search and rescue operations.

“This is a very dangerous storm. We are taking all necessary precautions to minimize loss of life and property,” said a government spokesperson in an official statement.

Coastal provinces including Thừa Thiên-Huế, Quảng Nam, and Da Nang are expected to be among the hardest hit. Local authorities have been reinforcing infrastructure, distributing emergency supplies, and setting up temporary shelters for displaced residents.
