Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that nearly 40 lakh women across the state are now actively involved in income-generating activities through self-help groups (SHGs), marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts toward women's financial empowerment.
Speaking at an event held at the Dehing Sports Complex in Margherita during the second phase of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan (MMUA), the Chief Minister said the initiative has transformed the socio-economic landscape in both rural and urban areas of Assam.
“Today, Assam has around four lakh self-help groups, empowering nearly 40 lakh women. These SHGs are not only boosting the state's economy but also driving social change,” Sarma said.
Highlighting the success of the program, he revealed that over eight lakh women have achieved an annual income of more than Rs 1 lakh, earning them the title of ‘Lakhpati Baideos’. He noted that these women have become well-versed in financial systems, engaged in the production of goods, and are moving towards complete self-reliance.
In recognition of their success, some of these women entrepreneurs were recently invited to New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they were honoured for their achievements.
“The government is committed to ensuring that many more women reach that level of success. Through MMUA and other welfare initiatives, we are building a strong foundation for women-led development in Assam,” the Chief Minister added.
