A devastating fire broke out at a CNG filling station in the Aushkandi area of Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj early Thursday morning, destroying at least twelve vehicles and causing widespread panic in the area.
The incident occurred around 6:00 AM at the Aushkandi CNG Filling Station, located along the busy Dhaka-Sylhet highway. According to local authorities, the fire started when a passenger bus was being refuelled and its gas cylinder suddenly exploded, igniting a blaze that quickly engulfed the station and nearby vehicles.
Md Habibur Rahman, Station Officer of the Nabiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed that the explosion triggered a rapid spread of fire. “The fire broke out during the refuelling of a bus when its cylinder exploded with a loud bang, quickly spreading flames in the area. Panic-stricken locals fled the scene, while firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control,” he said.
The fire destroyed nine auto-rickshaws, one passenger bus, and two motorcycles. A fire-fighting unit from the Nabiganj Fire Service was deployed to the scene and worked for more than two and a half hours to fully extinguish the flames.
No casualties have been reported so far, though officials are continuing to assess the extent of the damage. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
The incident has raised concerns about safety standards at CNG refuelling stations across the country, with locals and commuters urging stricter oversight to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
