Tripura braces for heavy rainfall: Government issues high alert and safety directives

The Tripura state government has issued a high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts in the coming days. In anticipation of the intense monsoon activity, disaster response mechanisms have been fully activated to ensure public safety and minimize damage.

According to the IMD's latest advisory, South Tripura district is expected to receive very heavy rainfall from August 21 to 25, prompting the issuance of an Orange Alert. Additionally, Gomati and Sepahijala districts are likely to witness similar conditions on August 24 and 25. All other districts have been placed under a Yellow Alert, with forecasts indicating heavy rainfall during the same period.

In response, the Revenue Department has directed all district administrations to implement emergency protocols, including: Round-the-clock monitoring of the weather situation. Deployment of disaster response teams including the NDRF, SDRF, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Fire Services, and Quick Response Teams. Ensuring the availability of rescue and relief equipment, such as boats and life jackets. Close surveillance of river levels and embankments to prevent overflow or breaches. Evacuation of residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas to safe shelters. Daily damage assessment reports to be submitted to the State Disaster Management Centre by 2 PM. Immediate action to clear debris and restore essential services in affected areas. Appointment of special officers in each district to coordinate disaster response operations. Volunteer mobilisation to support rescue and relief efforts if necessary. Prompt implementation of district-level disaster management plans. Regular updates to be monitored from the IMD for timely action.

All relevant departments—including police, health, power, education, agriculture, forest, and fisheries—have been alerted to ensure a coordinated and efficient response to any arising emergencies.

Residents, particularly those living in vulnerable and low-lying areas, are strongly advised to remain vigilant. The government has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during heavy rainfall, and steer clear of rivers and waterlogged zones. People are also encouraged to follow official updates and instructions issued by local authorities.
