Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Thursday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving the economic condition of farmers, stating that increasing farmers' income is a top priority of the current administration.
Speaking at an event in Nandalal Das Para, under Eshanpur Panchayat of Mohanpur Block, the Minister inaugurated the cultivation of hybrid paddy using the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) — a modern technique aimed at enhancing crop yield while reducing input costs.
“Farmers are our food providers. Their prosperity directly contributes to the progress of the state and the nation,” Nath said. “Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office, farmer welfare has remained a key focus. India is now the second-largest producer of rice in the world and the largest exporter of the crop.”
He also noted that out of 58 blocks in Tripura, 30 are now self-sufficient in food production, and 3 out of the 8 districts have achieved food self-sufficiency.
The Minister placed special emphasis on the SRI technique, highlighting that farmers using this method can produce up to 80 kilograms more rice per kani compared to traditional methods. He urged farmers to adopt SRI to increase productivity and income.
The event witnessed active participation from several key officials and local leaders, including: Chairman of Mohanpur Panchayat Samiti Rakesh Deb, Vice Chairman Sanjib Kumar Das, Vice Chairperson of Mohanpur Municipal Council Shankar Deb and Director of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department Dr. Phanibhushan Jamatia.
Minister Nath and the dignitaries also took part in paddy seedling transplantation, symbolizing the state’s active role in promoting sustainable agriculture.
