SIR Not New, Conducted Several Times Before: Union Minister Prahlad Joshi
Jul 30, 2025
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi defended the ongoing Systematic Investigation of Registration (SIR) process, stating that it is neither new nor unprecedented. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Joshi emphasized that SIR has been carried out on multiple occasions in the past and should not be a cause for concern.
"This is not the first time SIR is being conducted. It has happened several times before," he said. The minister further underlined that the process is being carried out by the Election Commission of India (ECI), an autonomous constitutional body.
“There is no need to fear this exercise. It is being conducted scientifically, with the use of technology, to ensure accuracy and fairness,” Joshi added.
His remarks come amid criticism from some political quarters, who have questioned the timing and intent of the SIR exercise. However, Joshi reaffirmed the government's confidence in the Election Commission's independence and neutrality.
