Meghalaya Documentary ‘Achik Kol’ wins top honours at International Speleology Congress

Meghalaya has made a remarkable mark on the global stage of documentary filmmaking with Achik Kol – The Uncharted Caves of South Garo Hills winning first place in the Professional Category at the 19th International Congress of Speleology, held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Directed by Gregory Allya Warjri and produced by NOMADS Film, the documentary captivated an international jury, standing out among entries from countries such as Brazil, Australia, Lebanon, and Hungary. The award recognises excellence in speleological filmmaking – the exploration and study of caves – and positions Achik Kol as a significant contribution to the genre.

Filmed during the Core Geo Caving Expedition 2024, the documentary offers a compelling narrative of explorers, scientists, and local cavers as they journey deep into the mysterious cave systems of Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills. The expedition led to a groundbreaking discovery – the fossil of a prehistoric whale unearthed in the remote village of Tolegre – a find hailed by scientists as an extraordinary paleontological revelation.

The film has already been screened at notable international platforms, including the Hidden Earth UK Caving Conference and Le Festival des Voyageurs d’Ici in Switzerland, receiving praise for its cinematic storytelling and scientific insight. It is now scheduled for a special screening in Shillong, where it is expected to spark widespread interest, particularly among students and young explorers.
