Sikkim records 29% rainfall deficit

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a significant rainfall deficit in Sikkim, raising concerns about water availability and agricultural productivity in the region. From June 1 to July 23, the state received only 561.3 mm of rainfall, which is 29 per cent below the seasonal average.

Among the four districts of Sikkim, Gyalshing has recorded the highest shortfall, receiving just 453.5 mm of rain a 44 per cent deficit compared to the normal 814.5 mm for the period. The district’s substantial shortfall underscores the uneven distribution of rainfall and its potential impact on local livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the capital city Gangtok also witnessed a significant decline, with 691.6 mm of rainfall, marking a 35 per cent drop from the average.

Meteorologists attribute the deficit to disrupted monsoon patterns, which have affected several northeastern states this year. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, as the rainfall distribution in the coming weeks will be crucial for the kharif crop season.
