Sword Attack Sparks Panic in Shalbagan; Four Hospitalized, Including Accused

A brutal sword attack in the crowded Shalbagan market on Sunday night left two people seriously injured, sparking panic and chaos in the area. The two alleged attackers were also hospitalized after being assaulted by an enraged mob.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 9:15 PM when two men identified as Khokon Das and Mana Debnath arrived on a motorcycle. Shortly after getting off the vehicle, Khokon allegedly pulled out a concealed sword-like weapon and began attacking people indiscriminately.

Papon Debnath was the first victim, sustaining critical injuries, including deep wounds to his spine. Another man, Sanjit Mukherjee, was also injured while trying to intervene or flee the scene.

Before the attackers could escape, local residents overpowered them and beat them severely. Police arrived shortly thereafter and took all four individuals including the two victims and the two accused into custody. They were immediately transported to Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital for treatment. Papon Debnath’s condition remains critical.

Residents expressed alarm over the involvement of Khokon Das, who is reportedly a known repeat offender with a history of violence and drug-related offenses. Locals claim he previously attempted to murder his own brother and sister-in-law with a similar weapon and was recently released from prison.

The incident has caused widespread fear in the locality. Police have launched an investigation and tightened security in and around Shalbagan to prevent any further disturbances.
