Pakyong District in Sikkim Revives Over 200 Acres of Barren Land for Cultivation

In a significant step towards agricultural revitalization, the Pakyong district administration in Sikkim has successfully brought over 200 acres of barren land under cultivation as part of the Mission Revival of Barren Land for Cultivation. The initiative, launched 18 months ago under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, aims to transform unused land into fertile and productive agricultural areas.

With active participation from local rural communities, the mission has been gaining steady momentum across the district. One of the key highlights of the initiative is the promotion of millet cultivation, which has seen considerable growth in recent months. So far, around 25 acres of barren land have been dedicated to millet farming, with an additional 50 to 60 acres expected to be cultivated during the current agricultural season.

Millet transplantation activities have already commenced in areas such as Samsing, where farmers are taking an active role in reviving traditional crops. In addition to millets, seasonal vegetables and fruits are also being cultivated on lands that previously lay unused. The produce is being marketed and sold directly by villagers, creating new income opportunities and strengthening the local economy.
