Tripura Charts Bold Path towards Energy Independence with 800 MW Pumped Storage Project

In a significant step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency, Tripura is set to develop the North-East region’s first-ever 800 MW Pumped Storage Project. The initiative was highlighted during the 29th North Eastern Region Power Committee (NERPC) meeting held in Guwahati on Friday, which was attended by Tripura’s Minister of Power Ratan Lal Nath.

The proposed project is a landmark development for the region and is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening energy reliability, storage capacity, and sustainability across the North-East. Once operational, it will help manage peak electricity demands, integrate renewable energy sources more efficiently, and reduce dependency on external power grids.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Nath emphasized the state’s proactive approach in securing the interests of the North-Eastern states. “Due to our strong and coordinated efforts, we have successfully shielded the region from a potential hike in gas prices. This has ensured both affordability and stability in the power sector, benefiting millions of consumers,” he stated.

Underlining the government’s broader vision, Nath credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for laying the foundation for long-term energy security and self-reliance in the region. “Under the visionary leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, we remain firmly committed to the principles of clean energy, regional empowerment, and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he said.
