Over 1 lakh Metric Tonnes of food grains distributed to over 2 crore beneficiaries by 12 States and UTs so far under PMGKAY-3

The government has said that over one Lakh Metric Tonnes of food grains are distributed to over two crore beneficiaries by 12 States and Union Territories so far under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana- PMGKAY-3. Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution Shudhanshu Pandey today briefed the media about PMGKAY-3 and One Nation One Ration Card, ONORC scheme through a virtual press conference.

He said, the department started implementation of the scheme for two months, May and June 2021 by providing an additional quota of free-of-cost foodgrains at a scale of 5 kilograms per person per month. Mr Pandey informed that the distribution of food grains is going as per schedule for the month of May and so far 15.55 Lakh Metric Tonnes of food grains have been lifted from Food Corporation of India depots by 34 States and UTs for this month. He said that almost all States have indicated an action plan to complete the distribution of PMGKAY-3 Foodgrains, for the months of May and June by the end of next month.

Mr Pandey also informed that ONORC is now enabled in 32 States and UTs. He said that monthly average of about 1.5 to 1.6 Crore potability transactions are being recorded under ONORC. Mr Pandey informed that more than 26.3 Crore portability transactions have taken place all across these States and UTs, since the inception of this scheme in August last year. He also informed that Rs 49,965 crore have been transferred directly into farmers’ accounts across India through Direct Benefit Transfer on account of wheat procurement.

While replying to a question about price rise of edible oils, the Secretary said that price of edible oils is being monitored closely by the government. He said, due to COVID conditions some stocks are stuck at ports due to clearance relating tests by various agencies, the problem is now addressed and soon stocks will be released in the market and this will show a softening impact on oil prices.
