Journalist in North Tripura covering corruption story attacked

In yet another incident a journalist of a local daily here in Tripura is attacked while covering a story on corruption in North Tripura at Kanchanpur.The incident is reported on Wednesday after the correspondent identified as Bikash Das of local daily  Shyandan Patrika sustained serious injury in an attack discovered upon him allegedly by a group of miscreants led by led by the chairman of the Shantipur village committee Shimul Chakma.

He is attacked by sharp weapons, rods and bamboos and later sustaining serious injured the correspondent managed to flee from the hands of miscreants to hide himself in a nearby jungle. However, after filing a police complaint in Kanchanpur police station Das was admitted to the local hospital, where the concerned doctor declared him as critical.

Meanwhile, the journalist body  Assembly of Journalist (AOJ) today condemned the incident to demand for immediate arrest of the village committee chairman Shimul Chakma and culprits involved in the attack. The AOJ in its press communique stated, “Series of such incidents where journalists of this state are being attacked is coming up following the Chgief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s threat to the media in a public meeting.”

“The Assembly of Journalists is of the opinion that the attack was carried out at the direct instigation of the party, which was motivated by the remarks of the Chief Minister. Therefore, the organization is demanding the ruling party BJP and the government to take simultaneous action against the incident,” press communique stated.
