At a time when several local organisations under the Joint Movement Committee (JMC) were protesting against the resettlement of Bru-Reang refugees in Kanchanpur sub-division, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA also the former health minister Sudip Roy Barman on Saturday proposed for a separate scheme of rehabilitation.

Barman on Saturday apprised the Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb of the worsening situation at Kanchanpur in his formal letter and demanded the programme of rehabilitation be implemented in a dispersed manner in many places so that no rural, hilly, urban or semi-urban is strained by extra burden of population or a perception thereof.

“What is needed to achieve this goal is an immediate initiative to engage with all stake-holders in a formal discussion so that all problems and grievances are sorted out in a peaceful and amicable manner,” the letter to Chief Minister stated. The agitators in Kanchanpur sub-division have been demanding that the state government resettle the members of the displaced community equally among Tripura’s eight districts.

Meanwhile, the protest against the proposed ‘Bru’ settlement on Saturday morning turned violent at least 3 police personnel sustained serious injury and another 45 years old was allegedly shot dead during a police-agitator clash. Government has however ordered for a magisterial probe into the incident.
