Centre decides to settle 30000 Brus in Tripura, approves Rs. 600 crore package

Ending all speculations, the Union Home Ministry in its historical decision Thursday approved Rs. 600 crore package for the 30,000 Reang refugees also known as Brus in Tripura and decided to settle them here in the state. The decision has come up after the Union Home Minister Amit Shah has met the representatives of brus and political parties in Tripura and other stakeholders in Delhi on Thursday evening.

Announcing the decision from Delhi Amit Shah said, "The centre has approved Rs. 600 crore package to settle the Brus in Tripura." He said, "40-30 ft. plot for housing is allotted for them and as per the agreement Rs. 4 lakh fixed deposit will be done for each Bru family."

"Financial assistance of Rs. 5000 per month will be provided in cash to each family," adding to this Amit Shah said, "The Union government shall provide free ration to them for 2 years next and more Rs. 1.5 lakh shall be provided to them for housing."

Meantime, Amit Shah thanked the Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Kumar Deb for allotting land for the Brus in Kanchanpur in North Tripura district. He however thanked the government of Tripura and Mizoram and Tripura's royal scion Maharaja Pradyot Kishore Deb Burman for their key role towards the Union government's decision of settling the deprived Brus in kanchanpur.

However, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb thanked PM Modi and Union Home Minister on this historic decision and stated, "I thank PM Narendra Modi ji and HM Shri AmitShah ji for the historic decision of settling of 30000 BRU people in Tripura permanently. I also congratulate our Brothers and Sisters of the BRU community."

He said, "The 30000 brus who sheltered in Tripura's Kanchanpur in North Tripura District in 1997 due to some ethnic tension in Mizoram have been deprived from their rights and culture. But then ending all pain and providing a relief to those Brus the Modi government at the centre after series of meeting with the government of Tripura and Mizoram and the representatives of Brus has decided to settle them in the state today."

Tripura's royal scion also the former congress president in Tripura Maharaja Pradyot Kishore Deb Burman has been constantly fighting for the rights of Brus in Tripura and demanded the centre to settle them permanently in the state by allotting land for them. Meantime, the Congress which expressed dissatisfaction today for not inviting them in the meeting at Delhi called by Amti Shah on Thursday issued an ultimatum of one month to the government to shift the Brus from Tripura to Mizoram.
