As assured earlier, the Tripura government to soon start dispatching sugar through Public Distribution System (PDS). Addressing a press conference today the State Food and civil supplies department minister Manoj Kanti Deb said that from June 12, rationing of sugar shall be initiated for around 9 lakhs ration card holders.

"BJP government has decided to provide sugar as an essential item", said Food Minister Manoj Kanti Deb.

He said despite the fact that from the month of April 2017 rationing of sugar stopped across the nation, the Tripura govenrment has put all out effort to resume this for the welfare of the poor of this state. Meantime, as per decision of the state government the food and civil supplies department in cooperation with the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare department of the state would procure paddy from the farmers in this state at a minimum support price of Rs. 1750 per quintal for the current Rabi marketing season.

While informing this to the media here at Agartala Food and civil supplies department Minister Manoj Kanti Deb said that the procurment of paddy would commence form June 10 and continue upto 31st July as per PPC wise procurment calendar with an initial collection target of 10, 000 MT of paddy. However, the Minister also said that unlike past years of the Left rule, the paddy cultivation across the state has gone up as major section of farmers who once stuck to Gaja cultivation has now diverted towards cultivation of paddy which perhaps paved a ray of hope for other section of farmers.
