Man thrashed by a mob for allegedly selling beef, forced to eat pork

In a shocking incident, a 68-year-old Muslim man being allegedly beaten up by a mob and forced to eat pork for allegedly selling beef in a market area in Assam’s Biswanath district.The incident was happened on April 7. According to the reports, the victim person named Shaukat Ali is selling beef at the weekly market area since couple of years. But on April 7, the elder man was thrashed by a mob and asking him how many years has he been selling beef and whether he has any licence to sell it.

The mob also asked him about his nationality – “Are you a Bangladeshi? Do you have your name in the NRC (National Register of Citizens)?” The man was received serious injuries in the mob attack. Meanwhile, Assam police has registered a case into the incident and detained five persons in connection with it after few videos of the incident went viral on social media.

A top official of Assam police said that, an FIR has been registered at Biswanath police station vide case no 80/2019 under section 143/341/325/294 (A)/295 (A)/153 (A)(B)/384 of IPC. “Police has already detained five persons for their alleged involvement in the incident and we will take action as per law,” the police official said. It is to be mentioned that, where the incident was happened, that area is under the Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency and the first phase poll of Tezpur and other four seats of Assam will be held on April 11.
