A suspected Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) top leader was detained from an undisclosed location of West Tripura District on Tuesday. He was planning to carry out IED strikes. The suspected JMB extremist was identified as Najir Sheikh (25) from Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The detainee is likely to be produced before a local court on Wednesday. Other sources told TRIPURATODAY that Najir was posing as a construction worker and staying in Arundhutingar.

This has led to presumption that several other JMB and jihadis may be in the capital and staying under the garb of being construction workers. “Police are trying to explore all possible angles and contexts in our interrogation on the detainee,” Director General of Police Akhil Kumar Shukla said to media.JMB has ties with locals in our state too and they were planning to carry out strikes inside our state too. Police is investigating if any important person was being targeted by Sheikh, he said.

"Lok Sabha election is coming nearer and movement of VIPs during the time is frequent, so we are also investigating if he was targeting any VIP," he said. The DGP said the matter has been brought to the notice of the National Investigation Agency.Top police officials including Rajiv Singh and Arindam Nath were present at the press meet of DGP which did not provide details of this detention.
