Worried by the untoward incidents being reported from different parts of the state in wake of the upcoming by-elections to the three tier panchayats, the Left parties in Tripura has demanded demanded to defer and reschedule bye-elections in over 3,000 seats of three-tier panchayat bodies which are scheduled to undergo polling on September 30. The state election commission however, refused for it saying that there are no such provisions.

The Left party today tabled a memorandum in this regard with the state election commissioner G Kameshwara Rao.  While addressing a press conference this evening the Left Front leader and CPI (M) spokesperson Goutam Das claimed, “Most of the candidates of both the CPI-M and the IPFT, an ally to the BJP government in the state could not file the nomination papers for the election within the stipulated time following attacks and intimidation by the BJP miscreants in block premises.”

Mr. Das however, questioned the role of the state election commission and said that the commissioner has played no role towards protecting the opposition supporters who faced attack by the BJP activists in different parts of the state. The left parties sought to defer and reschedule of bypolls and convene an all-party meeting immediately to resolve issues.
